Notes and Editorial Reviews

RAMEY Suite. 2 Short Pieces. Toccata Giocosa. Slavic Rhapsody. Burlesque-Fantasy on a Theme of Stephen Foster. Bagatelle on “Dies irae.” Djebel Bani. Blue Phantom. Piano Sonata No. 6 Stephen Gosling (pn) TOCCATA TOCC 0114 (78:19)

This is Volume 3 of the piano music by American composer and writer Phillip Ramey. I reviewed Volume 1 in 2007, which was my introduction to this robust and satisfying material. As in that compilation, Ramey has chosen Read more works from across a broad swath of his career, spanning a half century from 1960, when he was still a student of Alexander Tcherepnin in Chicago, to 2010. Naturally, such a broad expanse would produce a variety of modes of expression, yet Ramey is relatively consistent as a clear-voiced craftsman, exuding a certain American robustness and direct dramatic exposition, within an essentially conservative harmonic and structural framework. The grandly conceived piano sonata, from 2008, is especially emblematic of this quality. This collection, more so than Volume 1, also shows the composer’s more playful side, and even touches of humor, such as in the rollicking Stephen Foster fantasy. Once again, the composer is honored by the superb piano playing of Stephen Gosling, one of our finest advocates of piano music by living composers.
