The notable opera release of 1954, Puccini’s Manon Lescaut with Renata Tebaldi and Mario Del Monaco, recorded by Decca in Rome has long been absent from the market. This is rather inexplicable, given that Tebaldi was one of the most significant of the twentieth century Manon Lescauts’. Her interpretation of Prevost heroin reaches levels of beauty and sensuality only rivaled by Callas and Albanian in extraordinary beauty of vocal tone. Mario Del Monaco, by contrast, has often been discussed by the strong emphasis he gave the character of Des Grieux.
