La Clemenza di Tito Jeremy Ovenden (tn); Jonathan Cohen, cond; O of the Age of Enlightenment SIGNUM SIGCD251 (67:31 Text and Translation)

Virtuosity is put to its rightful purpose in this brilliant collection Read more of Mozart arias, sung flawlessly by tenor Jeremy Ovenden. The artist sings these Italian works, some familiar, some obscure, all technically treacherous in one way or another, with transcendent ease. The relentlessly high tessitura in “Il mio Tesoro,” the fioratura in “Fuor del Mar,” and the declamatory passages in the concert aria Misero! O sogno are delivered effortlessly, and honestly, with dramatic intent at the forefront, and self-serving vocal display in the shadows. Ovenden’s voice is slim and sonorous, blooming wonderfully in his upper range. There is erudition, carefully conceived style, and attention to detail, but not a hint of pedantry, or the précieux, so fashionable among English tenors of the day. He is a fine actor as well, and performs expansively but without affectation.

Ovenden is not the only virtuoso present, however. The musicians and the conductor of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment bring their own superlative contribution to the music-making, giving us another in their series of intelligent, authentic (although no one really knows what that means), full-blooded recordings. The diminished size of the ensemble brings a whole new character to these pieces. The Josef Krips and Wilhelm Furtwängler recordings of Don Giovanni, for example, both with Anton Dermota singing “Il mio Tesoro,” move with the stateliness of an ocean liner, whereas the Enlightenment people navigate a lighter, more agile, more buoyant craft.

It might be that the engineers are not as forthright as the performers. The sound of the orchestra tends to become mysteriously more robust in introductions and postludes. This does not seem to be entirely due to the players, making one suspicious of a dial being turned or a lever adjusted. A very minor point, however. This is a wonderful production!
