Notes and Editorial Reviews

In the tradition of Appalachian Journey and Obrigado Brazil, Yo-Yo Ma once again embraces styles and traditions that go beyond classical music by bringing together four American string virtuosos and creating a new kind of chamber ensemble. The Goat Rodeo Sessions is a landmark album project which uniquely showcases cellist Yo-Yo Ma, fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist Chris Thile, with special guest vocalist, Aoife O’Donovan on two tracks. While each musician is a renowned superstar in his own music sphere, they have come together as a unified ensemble in this most remarkable and organic cross-genre project stemming from their friendship and the title concept.

A “goat rodeo,” according the
Read more Urbandictionary.com, “is about the most polite term used by aviation people (and others in higher risk situations) to describe a scenario that requires about 100 things to go right at once if you intend to walk away from it.” Meyer first heard the term used in reference to “a very chaotic situation where a lot of agendas are kind of confused, and it’s hard to tell up from down.” Relating it to The Goat Rodeo Sessions participants, all four lead extremely demanding, if not chaotic lives, making their meeting here on this record, a goat rodeo miracle.

But the term proved a perfect catch-all, too, in describing the otherwise hard-to-define nature of the quartet’s music. Much of the group’s improvisational “co-authorship” was created on the spot. “There’s quite a bit of interplay between the musicians in bringing each piece to life, from composing to figuring out our parts,” says Meyer. Ma offers final clarification, “In the end, what we’re trying to do is simply make music that transcends whatever roots or catagories of backgrounds that it starts from – that just exists as something that we’re trying to express, through our community of values, as a moment in time creating very special music.”

Goat Rodeo: an unusual opportunity to explore mus December 11, 2012 By Nedra P G. (Larchmont, NY) See All My Reviews "We are great fans of Edgar Meyer, and were pleased to find this unusual recording. Pairing him with other great musicians is a brilliant idea. Strongly recommend that people shed their biases about "fiddlers" and learn to enjoy imaginative combinations of stringed instruments. The fact that he is the composer for some of these pieces makes it all the more interesting." Report Abuse
Oh Yeah? March 15, 2012 By Gary B. See All My Reviews "The New Jersey writer who did not like this piqued my interest. I do like cello, largely because of Jacqueline Mary du Pré who died a few years after I was diagnosed with the same disease. As for Yo Yo Ma I have enjoyed his work for years, including his ability to see beyond categories. So when I hear that someone thought this was awful, I bought it. Its worth the risk, as it turns out. Not to his taste certainly, everyone has to dislike something. I once heard someone say "My mother made me listen to Schoenberg until my ears bled" and I agree with Rossini (or was it Dvorak) about Wagner, while much Brahms sounds like a moose struggling to get out of mud to me... But what do any of us really know, other than "I like that" or "what the heck was that?". I liked Goat Rodeo, so thanks for the negative review that made me buy it!" Report Abuse
Terrible Music November 27, 2011 By Eliot L. (Englewood, NJ) See All My Reviews "This CD is so bad I wonder why the heck Yo Yo, the consummate musician (at least quite often) allowed it to be sold. Its awful. Truly terrible! I've heard many pickup groups with fiddlers, etc. improvise numbers so much better that its amazing that something this bad can be sold...... probably just because Yo Yo's name is on it. Don't waste your time or money.....!" Report Abuse
