Volume 6 maintains the same impressive standards set in Philip Martin's five previous Gottschalk releases on Hyperion. The pianist's full-bodied, liquid sonority, together with his maximum-security technique and ear for nuance ennoble these virtuoso showpieces and make them sound more substantial than they are. Listen to Martin's gorgeous trills and elegantly sculpted embellishments in the Carnaval de Venise, and suddenly you're on that slow boat to Nirvana. The same can be said about Martin's ravishing treatment of the flashy "Favorita" paraphrase (after Donizetti), or salon fluff like the Danse des sylphes and Le Sourire d'une jeunne. Yet the pianist also shines when the music has more to offer, as in
Read more his alluring pedal effects throughout Vision's shifty, delicate arpeggiated figures. And Martin does not let Gottschalk's bold harmonic ideas in the Marche funèbre and the Caprice élégiaque squeak by unnoticed. If you've been collecting this series, don't stop now. A delectable disc.
