Notes and Editorial Reviews

Composer, educator, conductor, ethnomusicologist (in the tradition of Bartok and Kodaly), author, administrator, soldier and lawyer, John Donald Robb was born in Minneapolis. During his long and fruitful life, he composed an impressive body of work including symphonies, concerti for piano and viola, two operas, choral works, songs, a musical comedy, chamber music and arrangements of folk songs. He was also a pioneer composer of electronic music. A graduate of Yale University (1915), Robb received his legal training at the University of Minnesota and at the Harvard Law School. He practiced international law in New York City from 1922 to 1941, with his musical studies and composing a constant avocation. During this time he studied with many Read more leading composers including Roy Harris, Paul Hindemith, Nadia Boulanger and Darius Milhaud. In 1950 he earned a Master of Arts degree from Mills College. Music was truly a central part of Robb's life. In 1941, he began a second career when he was appointed Professor of Music and later Chairman of the Department of Music at the University of New Mexico. A year later he became acting Dean of the UNM College of Fine Arts, and, from 1946 through 1957, was its Dean. Fascinated by folk music, Robb made field recordings of over 3,000 songs and dances from Nepal, South America and, significantly, the American Southwest. The likely date of the composition for his Symphony for Strings appears to have been about 1946 right after the end of the War. His colorful Viola Concerto was composed in 1953. Read less
