Notes and Editorial Reviews

Joseph Szigeti (1892-1973) was born in Budapest, Hungary. He was first given lessons by his father and uncle, and became a pupil of Hubay at the Budapest Academy. He began to play in public when he was ten and made his debut in Berlin in 1905. After his London debut in 1907, he remained in Britain until 1913. During this time he gave the premiere of Hamilton Harty's Violin Concerto which was composed for him. His musical activity was interrupted by World War I, but after the War, he dramatically expanded his concert career. He visited the Soviet Union eleven times between 1924 and 1927 and introduced Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto in Leningrad in 1924, while the composer was still in the West. At about the same time he made his American Read more debut. During the 1930s, he toured extensively in the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, South America, South Africa and Japan. During the 1920s and 1930s, he was the principal house violinist for Columbia Records, just the way Fritz Kreisler was for HMV. He made many concerto recordings for Columbia with such conductors as Sir Hamilton Harty, Bruno Walter and Sir Thomas Beecham. Read less
