Notes and Editorial Reviews

THE SUBLIME VOICE OF LYNDA BARRETT Lynda Barrett (sop); Philip Stopford (org); Audrey Gillian (pn) PRIORY 1043 (74:43)

Selections by FRANCK, SULLIVAN, MOZART, PURCELL, VIVALDI, STOPFORD, HANDEL, BACH-GOUNOD, GRAHAM, RUTTER, HEAD, LLOYD WEBBER, RUBBRA, ADAM

Lynda Barrett is a church soprano from Ireland who here sings several religious and secular pieces, accompanied by organ or piano. The accompanists are not identified on the CD back, but inside the Read more booklet Barrett thanks “Philip Stopford and Audrey Gillian for giving up their time … to accompany me.” Looking her up online, Gillian plays both piano and organ, but Stopford is only an organist, so I am supposing that they split their duties accordingly. (The BBC reviewer had absolutely no clue who the accompanists were.) She has exactly the kind of pure, clear voice one would expect from a first-class church soprano, with excellent pitch, phrasing, and musical styling. Everything is sung very much the same, which makes the program a little dull even though she has an excellent voice. Even in a piece like Purcell’s Music for a While, where some interpretation would be welcome, Barrett just gives a straight reading, though she does sing some lovely variations in “Come Unto Him” from Messiah. . I should also point out that Stopford set the first verse of the Stabat Mater especially for Barrett. The album was recorded at St. Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast, which gives her voice a beautiful ambience although it makes the organ and piano sound less crisp.

Your decision to acquire this CD, then, will depend on how much you love church sopranos and their repertoire. In its class, it is certainly a fine disc.
