Good performances January 29, 2013 By roger horn (Clarion, PA) See All My Reviews "Although I already had most, if not all the works included with Ansermet, who I have always prefered I ordered the Stravinsky performances because I haven't had that much of his music with him conducting, but have admired what I did hear. I have been very pleased with the pieces here, which Archiv sent with their usual promtness. I thought some of the performances would obviously sound old, but find the sound quite good by my standard, which though relatively low are adequate to conveying the music well." Report Abuse
Remembrance From Long Ago August 27, 2012 By Robert Nivison (Bel Air, MD) See All My Reviews "Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat was one of my favorite Columbia LPs but it has been long destroyed in one of my many moves. This CD set also offered me a chance to hear again my other favorite Stravinsky--Le Sacre du Printemps, The Firebird, and Pétrouchka--plus introduce me to many pieces I'd never heard before. The only Stravinsky on CD in my possession before now was Pollini's recording of Pétrouchka: Three movements for Piano. Listening to this set brought back many fond memories of music from the LP days, but without the clicks and pops." Report Abuse
A blast from the past! July 26, 2012 By stephen quinn (huntington beach, CA) See All My Reviews "What a delight! It was 40 years ago that I first became immersed in Stravinsky's music via the Columbia box set of his 3 early ballets. Now to find, not just the Firebird, Petrouchka, and the Rite of Spring, but a whole host of other gems, all presented in pristine fidelity, and for little more than that original box set set me back, who could ask for more? Whether Stravinsky's readings of his own works are truly "definitive" misses the point. These recordings reveal a brisk precision as well as a certain emotional detachment one might expect from a composer who felt music "by its very nature, is essentially powerless to express anything at all, whether a feeling, an attitude of mind, a psychological mood, a phenomenon of nature, etc…. Expression has never been an inherent property of music. That is by no means the purpose of its existence." Could have fooled me! The tender moments of wry humor and pathos in Pulcinella, here rendered so wonderfully, seem to belie the composer's own philosophy. 5 Stars!" Report Abuse
