Notes and Editorial Reviews

Johann Strauss II was very popular among the famous composers of his own day. He conducted the first performance of Tristan und Isolde and Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (though excerpts) by Wagner, who referred to Strauss II as one of the best composers of the day. Wagner liked to conduct Wine, Women and Song on his own birthday. Strauss II and Franz Liszt were close friends, and the Fruhlingsstimmen waltz is said to have been created while they were playing the piano at a party. Brahms once referred to Strauss II as "one of my few reliable friends." He often spent the summer in Bad Ischl, where he frequently visited the Strauss home. When Adele, Strauss' third wife, asked Brahms for his autograph, he took her fan and wrote on it several Read more bars of An der schonen, blauen Donau, adding beneath it, "To my regret, this wasn't composed by Brahms." Here we have a wonderful CD of the music by Strauss II played by the great string players from the Vienna Philharmonic. Read less
