Notes and Editorial Reviews

World-renown Czech piano virtuoso Radoslav Kvapil presents the most celebrated piano works of his countryman Leos Janacek. The cycles "On an Overgrown Path" and "In the Mists" are popular repertoire and have been used in films, and the Piano Sonata ("1.X.1905") is also among Janacek's best-regarded works. Kvapil delivers these haunting and moody works with both delicacy and strength, evoking the restlessness inherent in the pieces.

"He characterizes the changing moods of the ‘Overgrown Path’ suite with a sure touch, but keeps them in a proper contrast... He makes them relate to one another within a general mood. That is one, generally, of griefs remembered.... one along which this most
Read more self-honest of composers had trodden... So Kvapil lends a wistfulness even to the livelier pieces, ("They chattered like little swallows"), but also makes the anguished No. 8... calm rather than frenzied in its pain. A similar understanding of contrast distinguishes the four beautiful pieces of ‘In the Mists,’ which are marked by a dignified sadness that Kvapil understands well... These are interesting, intelligent and well-executed performances." -- Gramophone

Excellent performance and near-perfect sound April 5, 2014 By Gregory S. (Larchmont, NY) See All My Reviews "Although this selection of Janácek's piano music might have been richer, it is fresh and lovely, and Kvapil's playing is nice and convincing. Very well recorded, without being overwhelmingly brilliant, and appropriate to the simplicity of the music." Report Abuse
