Wait! Not so fast. I know this looks like just another collection of Russian orchestral showpieces (of which there are countless available), but André Cluytens was a great conductor, and an especially fine conductor of Russian music. You'll know from those wild piccolo runs at the beginning of Mussorgsky's Night on Bare Mountain that this is not going to be your run-of-the-mill performance. Far from it! With stunning playing from the Philharmonia Orchestra, Cluytens reminds you why you fell under the spell of this music in the first place. And he doesn't stop there, but continues with captivating performances of Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov, especially the Capriccio espagnol and the Polovtsian Dances (sans chorus).

Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, which performs the bulk of this program, plays this Russian music with a remarkable range of color and a sort of timbral authenticity that was not uncommon among French orchestras circa 1960. If you think you've heard these pieces far too many times, this disc will prove a real curative.
