Pick up this new CD of Telemann flute concertos and the first thing that may strike you is the cover photo of Emmanuel Pahud holding a shiny modern flute (well, maybe the way they matched the purple of the back cover to his shirt. Or his haircut, but that's not the point). Didn't the "historical performance" movement teach us we need to hear Baroque music on old instruments? But wait a minute; turn the CD over: Viola d'amore? By looking at old instruments, "Historical performance" gave an idea of the kind of clarity and articulation were inherent in the design of the instruments, and began to emphasize light, shadow, and architecture over the billowing blowhard drapery that signified "baroque" before, say, 1970, the year, coincidentally, Emmanuel Pahud was born.
A student of Michel Debost (the flute's Dorothy De Lay) and a protégé of Aurèle Nicolet, Pahud has quickly risen from the first chair flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic (a position he has since resigned) to become the heir apparent to Jean-Pierre Rampal as the household name in all things flutish. Joined by Rainer Kussmaul and the handful of other Berlin Philharmonic principals that compose the Berlin Barock Solisten, Pahud is in his element, all creamy tone and elegant line. The texture throughout the recording is light but solid and the interplay of the soloists is smartly conversational. Two of the concertos receive their premiere recordings, an indication of the staggering volume of Telemann's output; the performances by Pahud et al. are a reminder of just how it sparkles when well-performed.
