Notes and Editorial Reviews

Muti has a long and distinguished history performing Schumann’s symphonies, dating from his early EMI days. This digital cycle was issued at the height of the CD glut, and passed virtually unnoticed. It is exceptional in every respect. The playing has all of Muti’s typical incisiveness, but with that natural Viennese warmth (and gorgeous horn tone) that really makes the music sing. The cycle is also extremely well engineered. There are no weak performances, but if you want to sample it at its very best, start with the “Rhenish” Symphony—a glorious performance that manages to be grand without ever sounding heavy or excessively thick texturally. A great set.
