Notes and Editorial Reviews

It's always difficult to speak authoritatively about performances of unfamiliar music, but these works are so strange, so beautiful, and so remarkable that criticism is disarmed. Impressioni del vero ("Impressions from life") consists of three, three-movement suites of strikingly colored, harmonically arresting, melodious music. The titles give some impression of these atmospheric pieces: Dialogue of Bells, The Cypresses and the Wind, The Woodpecker, and Festival in the Valley of Hell. "Haunting" is perhaps the best term to describe the music--it gets under your skin, and doesn't sound like anyone else.

Pause del silenzio ("Breaks in silence") consists of
Read more two suites, one of five movements and one consisting of seven brief episodes played continuously. There's an improvisatory quality to these pieces that makes them completely unpredictable, and yet somehow they work well together. Okay, let's forget about describing the impossible and turn instead to performances that sound remarkably confident and assured. The orchestra plays very well, conductor Francesco La Vecchia (as in his Casella series) leads with a masterly sense of pacing, and the sonics are excellent. This is just wonderful.

Vivid Musical Portraits- Italian Impressionism? September 25, 2012 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Gian Francesco Malipiero's 'Impressions of Life' and the superb 'Breaks in Silence' are wonderful compositions, very melodic and accessible. These are basicaly multi-sectioned, extended 'nature tone poems', expressing the composer's musical interpretations of various aspects of nature and life in general. Due to the number and relative brevity of the individual sections in each work, there is little in the way of complex sound structures or sustained thematic development. Rather, the coherence of the material lies in the beautiful orchestration which Malipiero brought to the material, and also the smooth and realistic transitions from one section to the next. The Rome Symphony Orchestra and conductor are excellent throughout. Very definitely recommended for a great listening experience." Report Abuse
Awesome! September 15, 2012 By Lisa Ragsdale (Minneapolis, MN) See All My Reviews "I too agree with David Hurwitz and give this a 10/10. Unlike the previous reviewer, I am a musician and composer. The performance by these musicians is top notch, but the true joy of the album is the music. Malipiero's compositions are difficult to classify, but it satisfies whether you love romantic or modern music. There is just enough dissonance and resolution to remind you he lived most of his life in the 20th century, yet just enough awareness in his music of baroque and romantic styles to keep one captivated. Don't pass this up if you like an adventure in hearing something new!" Report Abuse
Beautiful Atmospheric Orchestral Music June 23, 2012 By Wil L W. (Richwood, TX) See All My Reviews "I like this atmospheric orchestral music with its beautiful melodies, harmonies, and resulting impressions. The music is beautifully played and the sound is good. (I agree with David Hurwitz's grade of 10/10 for Artistry and Sound.) I found that I could easily relate the music to the subject matter with musical depictions of wild life, village sounds, war sounds, etc. The booklet is a good companion to the music. Great orchestral playing, good sound, and the Naxos bargain price make this issue a great value. Recommended. [I have no formal music education, but I am a lover of concert music, and a serious collector. My special interest is nineteenth-century Romantic compositions (Russian, German, other parts of Europe, USA).]" Report Abuse
