Notes and Editorial Reviews

Felix Mendelssohn was enthusiastic about her - that alone should be reason enough to rescue the composer Josephine Lang from oblivion. Whoever experiences the sound of her Lieder on this world premiere recording asks all the more why the musical world has ignored this treasure for so long. Her father was the son of a horn player and an actress. At fifteen he was already a musician at the court of King Ludwig of Bavaria. Her mother was the daughter of a flautist and had a great career as an opera singer before her marriage. She died when Josephine was nine years old. Josephine was of delicate health and could not go to school. Instead she was tutored at home. She began to compose music at five and became known at eleven. At twelve she began Read more teaching the piano and at thirteen she wrote her first Lieder. It was recommended to her father - in vain - that the child study music seriously. He handed his daughter over to affordable, but not particularly qualified teachers. Then Mendelssohn came along. He heard her play and sing her own songs and he returned the following year on the way back from Italy, in order to teach Josephine seriously for several weeks. On December 6, 1831 Mendelssohn wrote to her family: "If is the most perfect musical joy that I have so far been privileged to partake in. When she sits at the piano and begins such a song, the notes sound differently - the entire music moves so, back and forth, and in each note is the deepest, most refined feeling. When she then sings the first note with her tender voice, each and every person becomes still and contemplative, each one stirred through and through after his own fashion. If only you could hear this voice! So innocent and instinctively beautiful, coming from the innermost depths of the soul, and yet so calm! Last year all of her aptitude was already there... but since then she has made the most astonishing progress. Whoever is not gripped by the new songs feels absolutely nothing." Such is the music on this disc, at least according to Mendelssohn. Read less
