Notes and Editorial Reviews

Brahms published the score of his Piano Concerto in d minor in 1861. Following the usual practice of the times, in which new works were spread primarily through arrangements for small ensembles, the publisher asked Brahms for a version for piano four hands. Brahms had little enthusiasm for this idea, however, and answered his publisher on May 28, of the following year. "I cannot find it practical to arrange my concerto for four hands. It would be terribly difficult to play and, no matter how much the contents were diluted, it would still sound incomprehensible and unclear. I must admit that it would have been very practical had I immediately published it in a form in which a second piano could have played the orchestral accompaniment, Read more although the help of the soloist would still have been needed." In the end, Brahms was convinced to craft the desired version. On February 11, 1864, he wrote from Vienna to his publisher: "To my own surprise and perhaps yours as well, I am today sending you an arrangement of my concerto for four hands. I think I may take pride in how practical and downright easy to play the arrangement has turned out." The arrangement Brahms made of his Tragic Overture did not suffer a similar fate for Brahms was happy to make the arrangement of this work for piano four hands right from the beginning. Read less
