Excellent Performance January 19, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "A shattering shriek of despair and crashing orchestral chords bring to a close a very fine recording of Pietro Mascagni's tragic masterwork Cavalleria Rusticana. If the title is supposed to mean rustic chivalry, Mascagni surely must have intended some sort of oxymoronic twist here, since there is precious little chivalry anywhere in the story! What one gets instead is ill-fated romantic relationships, greed, lust, destructive machismo, and of course a violent resolution. With that having been said, you may be pleasantly surprised at how good this early 1990's Naxos recording is. Under Alexnder Rahbari's direction, the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra plays the musical score with power and passion throughout the entire work, providing a solid foundation for the inspired singing of the excellent cast. Soprano Stavka Evstatieva as the luckless peasant girl Santazza, Giacomo Aragall's powerful tenor role as the morally ambivalent Turidda, and Eduard Tumagian as the vengeful Alfio deliver definitive, sharply defined character expositions, along with the fine work of the minor characters and the Slovak Philharmonic Choir. There are many high quality recordings of Mascagni's masterpiece available (just look at Arkivmusic's inventory to see what I mean), and I believe this Naxos effort ranks right up there with the best of them..... and at Naxos' bargain price, it becomes even more attractive. This recording is a pleasure to listen to, and I can heartily recommend it." Report Abuse
