"Comparison between Karajan's strong and heroic reading and Klemperer's is fascinating. Both have very similar merits, underlining the symphonic character of the work with their weight. Even so, Karajan uses Bass and Baritone soloists who are lighter than usual, for both the Rocco (Ridderbusch) and the Don Fernando (Van Dam) lack heft in their lower registers. Yet they sing dramatically and intelligently, while the Pizarro of Zoltan Kéléman is made to sound the more biting and powerful.
