Notes and Editorial Reviews

Cellist Alban Gerhardt, by his own admission, has a great affinity for Spanish and Latin American music. Indeed, composers such as Piazzolla, Granados, and "honorary" Spanish composer Ravel get the royal treatment on Gerhart's Debut Series disc from EMI. Along with accompanist Rina Dokshinsky, Gerhardt rips through 'Le Grand Tango' by Piazzolla, calculating every rhythmic change and melodic gesture, evoking visions of dancers in a ballroom. Gerhardt at times makes his cello sound like folk percussion instruments, and at other times sings it like a violin. De Falla's popular 'Danse rituelle de feu' sounds fresh in this arrangement for cello and piano; perhaps this is due to the great Piatigorsky's arrangement, along with these inventive Read more performers. The gorgeous "Intermezzo" from Granados's 'Goyescas' is played with warmth and simplicity, which is the perfect approach to take to this work. The inclusion of two works by Ravel makes him a Spanish-flavored composer. Ravel synthesized his impressionist harmonies with Spanish rhythms and melodies, creating a sensual musical language. 'Alborada del gracioso,' arranged by Castelnuovo-Tedesco, emphasizes Ravel's use of color and motion, with Gerhardt pulling out all of the stops. Read less
