Singer Jan van der Crabben and Read more pianist Inge Spinette constitute an exemplary ensemble. They move as one, and seem of like mind, temperament, and musical instinct in this obvious labor of love. Both musicians are well schooled and give the impression that no note or word has missed careful scrutiny and reflection. Perhaps this is a little too obvious, as the musicians often seem to move with such circumspection that the flow of the line is sometimes stemmed.

The baritone’s agreeable and beautifully controlled voice has an opaque rather than limpid quality. He employs it with elegance and decorum, though his emotional parameters are slightly narrower than some of his distinguished predecessors. He does not exult as expansively as Pierre Bernac in Le Temps a laissé son manteau (Testament), nor is he as sensual as Maggie Teyte in Le Faune (Naxos). Nevertheless, one admires his earnestness and grace.

His accompanist does not play as lyrically as Dalton Balwin or other specialists in the French repertoire. The tone is a bit heavy, and her pedaling is so sparse that the wonderful sonorities of La Mer est plus belle are not allowed to ring out. She seems more intent on crisp articulation, but it diminishes many of the songs’ lustrous harmonic effects. This approach serves her well, however, in Mandoline, which she and her partner perform with great charm.

The engineers might have given us the sense of a larger room, and the microphones might have been placed at a farther distance, as a little more halo around the sound would have made this admirable recital still more attractive.
