Few performers have as lasting an impact on music as did Yehudi Menuhin. Best known as a violinist, Menuhin worked as a conductor, a teacher and more. His career spanned the lion's share of the 20th century, as these historic recordings attest.
IN MEMORIAM begins with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto--not a piece often associated with Menuhin, but one with deep meaning for the violinist. Although it disappeared from his repertoire relatively early in his career, he first mastered the concerto at age 8. This performance, captured in 1949, is a rare record of his vigorous approach to this emotional piece.
By comparison, Menuhin approaches Beethoven's violin sonatas much more smoothly. His energy is palpable, however, and the interplay with
