R E V I E W:

The second volume in pianist Mordecai Shehori's "Learning by Example" series showcases a broad range of classical sonatinas by Clementi, Mozart, Beethoven, Benda, Spindler, Dussek, Kuhlau, and Diabelli, with a conservative "modern" like Kabalevsky thrown in for good measure. These works are ideal for students, owing to their modest technical demands and delightful musical value. Mordecai Shehori performs them beautifully. Listen, for example, to how imaginatively he gauges balances between his right and left hands as well as subtle dynamic gradations that keep the textures vibrant and alive. What's more, Shehori achieves this through hand balance and finger power alone, with virtually no help at all from the sustain pedal. The dry sound is typical of Cembal d'amour's overly close-up engineering, yet it suits this repertoire to more appropriate effect than in the pianist's Liszt release on this same label. Once in a while, however, I detect a few slightly out-of-tune notes. In all, this is the most musically centered playing I've heard from Shehori on disc since his excellent live Brahms F minor sonata.
