Notes and Editorial Reviews

These are excerpts from complete recordings previously issued by L'Oiseau-Lyre. In each case, Bonney made a noteworthy contribution to performances not marked by overall excellence, and she deserves to be singled out. Östman's conducting is generally infuriating. He tends toward extremes of tempo (mostly frenetic), and he often reduces the orchestral parts of the arias to a feeble pitter-patter of notes. Hogwood, who leads only Tito, is considerably better, though he too has precious moments of the wrong sort. Bonney retains her aplomb, ungraceful only in an unaccountably choppy "Ach, ich fühl's" (where Östman is no help at all). She sings both the standard and the alternate versions of Susanna's two arias from Read more Figaro, and is joined in duets by the Count of Hagan Hagegård, the Countess of Arleen Auger, and the Figaro of Petteri Salomaa. Her partners in Don Giovanni are Hagegård again, and Bryn Terfel as Masetto. Gilles Cachemaille and Kurt Streit are Papageno and Tamino to her Pamina; and Diana Montague shines in the lovely Annio-Servilia duet from Tito. The excerpts are most generous and really allow us to focus on Bonney in each of the roles she sings (while sparing us many of the dislikable aspects of the complete recordings).

Her tone is compact and gleaming, and the voice can carry a smile or melt into warmth, though she's generally a forthright singer, never arch or pouty in the hackneyed soubrette manner. Her Pamina is promising enough to make you wish she had a better conductor, and you'll sit up and notice her Servilia. Susanna and Zerlina—pretty much the same type of character—are determined and sexy, and their arias are wonderfully sung, with fresh tone, apt inflections, and a beguiling lilt. The alternate arias for Susanna are a nice lagniappe, though they are certainly less effective than the originals.

A delectable sampler, highly recommended.
