Notes and Editorial Reviews

"It is the future that determines the continuity of music." This comment on the vague life-span of his own work was made by the Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski in one of his last newspaper interviews. His words touch on an issue of fundamental importance to many artists. Will the creations survive the creator's biological end, will they be of significance to future generations or will they be forgotten, will they only be remembered by the experts, emerging only on the occasion of one of the much too rare anniversaries? As the history of music teaches us, such skepticism towards ones own art is definitely to be recommended. The majority of compositions ever written are of no importance to the present music business. Apart from the Read more repertoire pieces, only a minority outlives the respective present. However, it is an asset of our digital documentation era that today's music market provides for the continuity of compositions to a previously unknown extent. Inspirations once exclusively entrusted to paper and thereby demanding substantial efforts to be reproduced, are nowadays simply and directly recorded onto sound data carriers. However, this does not guarantee that the compositions will ever find there way into the concert hall - and obviously live performances will continue to remain the sole genuine form of communication - but at least their future availability can be considered as secured. The continuity of the four compositions presented in this recording is undisputed - although they are not the most popular examples for these instruments. Their charm, grace and expression have established all four works firmly in the great history of music. Read less
