Vesselin Stanev was born in Bulgaria in 1964, and began to study music in the school in his home town of Varna. In 1981, he was admitted to the State Academy of Music in Sofia. In 1982, he won a prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the following year he became a student at the Moscow Conservatory from which he graduated with honors in 1988. Between 1988 and 1990 he studied with Alexis Weissenberg in Paris. Today he makes his home between France and Switzerland.
