PJBE was founded in 1951, but only now are we starting to appreciate its pioneering spirit. In the early days, Jones assembled unglamorous and busy professionals to explore the chamber music potential of brass. A quartet became a quintet, then a quintet became a 'tentet', extending to a large symphonic brass ensemble when required.
The PJBE Quintet formed the kernel of a select roster which included most of London's brass elite. Jones's enterprise, in realising the potential of virtuoso classical brass as a richly varied and durable medium, was inexhaustible as he commissioned new work to reflect the growing aspirations of the group alongside a catholic portfolio of arrangements...
