Notes and Editorial Reviews

SCHUBERT Piano Sonatas: in E, D 157; in A, D 664; in a, D 845 Michelangelo Carbonara (pn) PIANO CLASSICS 0034 (72:26)

"The 1815 piano sonata in E, D 157, is Schubert’s first and it consists of three of a projected four movements. The third movement is marked Menuetto, but the tempo is Allegro Read more vivace; it’s really a scherzo and serves as an effective finale. To be honest, I find Schubert’s first few piano sonatas, like Mozart’s, to be only intermittently interesting. The keyboard writing often isn’t particularly resourceful; they contain a certain amount of empty passagework, and many of the melodies are just not that good, but I enjoy listening to them occasionally for their charm, sense of innocence, and passages whose experimentation foreshadows what was soon to come as these two supreme composers mastered the genre.

By beginning this program of Schubert sonatas with the first, it seems that Michelangelo Carbonara is signaling the start of a complete Schubert cycle. If so, his shapely, animated performance of the piece, sensitively phrased and minutely faithful to the score, shows that he is well attuned to early Schubert. The very clean recording flatters the mellifluous sound of his Yamaha.

The “little” A-Major Sonata, D 664 (1819–25), is one of Schubert’s most endearing works, eager to please, like the Fifth Symphony and the A-Major Duo for violin and piano. Carbonara plays it fluently, with a little more forward momentum in the finale than I favor. His performance is distinguished by a perfectly gauged account of the slow movement, its wistful tenderness neither overblown nor trivialized."
