Also, Horowitz was very particular about programming on his recordings, taking the listener through a series of contrasts in mood - so his recordings as originally sequenced added up to a fulfilling experience. Finally, Horowitz recorded some of these works several times, and Sony has chosen stereo recordings over mono regardless of performance quality.

At a time when Scarlatti was rarely performed on any instrument, Horowitz was regularly programming his short binary Sonatas. It's no exaggeration to write that Horowitz did more to put Scarlatti on the map than any other pianist. The Sonatas here include the twenty or so he recorded for Columbia in the 1960s and the group he played at his Met recital in 1981. They document a gradual shift in Horowitz's playing from a straight yet sassy approach to a more Romantic interpretation. By the time of his last recitals, Horowitz's Scarlatti almost sounded like baroque Chopin.

Horowitz recorded relatively little Mozart before he was in his eighties. One can see why here. The F major (from 1947) is large scaled and tense - except for the middle movement which is phrased like an opera aria. Maybe the pianist was trying to shatter the porcelain doll image of Mozart, but the outer movements sound positively brutal. The A major (live, 1966) is precious, in the negative sense of the word - every little harmonic flower is paused at and sniffed over. It's a pity that the elder Horowitz, by then more attuned to Mozart, never returned to these works.

Horowitz was more at home with Haydn than with Mozart. Something about Haydn's rapid mood shifts and changes in pianistic texture agreed with the pianist. The F major (from 1966) and E-flat (1989) Sonatas are all wit and charm, while the first movement of the C major (1968) is mock seriousness theme & variations before letting loose with virtuoso fingerwork in the finale. Sadly missing from this collection is the Beethovenesque Sonata No. 52 that Horowitz recorded several times in the mono era.

It was Horowitz who revived interest in Mozart's great rival, Muzio Clementi - although unfortunately few pianists have followed Horowitz's lead as they did with Scarlatti and Scriabin. His 1954 recording of Clementi Sonatas re-established the composer's importance, but it's not included here: instead we get the Sonata Quasi Concerto in C major (live, 1980) and isolated sonata movements from 1963 and 1972. The 1980 performance is probably larger scaled than Clementi envisioned - although Horowitz's own cadenza in the slow movement is lovely. The earlier fragments are to-the-point and some of the straightest playing you'll hear from Horowitz.

VH was never considered a great Beethoven interpreter. His performances of these six Beethoven sonatas are respectable and respectful - maybe too much so. In certain pieces, like the finales of the Moonlight or Appassionata Sonatas, one wishes that Horowitz would just "let go" and be his virtuoso self, instead of soberly playing the notes to fulfil his recording contract. Of the Beethoven Sonatas here, Op. 10, No. 3 is the best, where Horowitz captures the composer's humor in the first movement and pathos in the second. The Pathetique fares well, too.

Horowitz recorded only one Schubert Sonata, the great B-flat, D. 960. The recording here comes from Horowitz's 25th Anniversary recital at Carnegie Hall in 1953. The pianist, who does not play the first movement repeat, performs the work on a Lisztian scale, particularly in the last movement, where he uses dynamics that would have destroyed Schubert's piano. He also tends to push the tempo in parts - particularly the last two movements. (Contrary to popular belief, Horowitz was not a rusher - his tempos were generally within the norms of the era - but he does seem in a hurry here.) The slow movement, surprisingly, is strongest in this performance - a true andante sostenuto that's beautifully sung. Still, one is much better off with Kempff, Perahia, or Pollini in this work.

Chopin's Second Sonata was a semi-regular on Horowitz's concert programs. The recording here (1962) is one of the most structurally cohesive I've heard from Horowitz in a longer work. He gives us an opening movement (sans repeat) that artfully balances detail and outline, and his sparing use of the sustaining pedal results in clear textures that belie Wagner's remark that Chopin was a right-handed (i.e., melody only) composer. The funeral march, too, is given in an uncommonly crisp rhythm.

There are several printed editions of Schumann's F minor Sonata (sometimes called the Concerto without Orchestra). If you're trying to figure out which one Horowitz plays, you'll need scissors and tape - because he mixes and matches parts from each. Uptight musicologists will be driven up a wall by this sort of deconstruction/reconstruction, but I posit that each of Horowitz's decisions (playing the four movement version, discarding the rarely played first Scherzo, and reinstating harmonic suspensions from the First Edition) are to the Sonata's advantage. It comes across as an emotional whole - which is something for a pianist who was accused of sectionalizing everything he played.

Sony has included Horowitz's 1977 (or 1976, depending on your sources) recording of Liszt's B minor Sonata. The pianist had not played the Sonata in public since 1951 and it does not seem to have been completely under his fingers when this remake was done. It does not compare conceptually or technically to either Horowitz's 1932 studio or 1949 live renditions. If you like your Liszt tortured, dragged, agonized over, and banged in places, this is the version for you. (It's a pity RCA didn't record Horowitz's March 1978 Carnegie performance of the work, where he was in form and white hot.)

With the Rachmaninoff & Scriabin Sonatas, we reach the high point of this compilation. Rachmaninoff gave Horowitz carte-blanche to create a fusion edition of the original and revised versions of his 2nd Sonata, and the resultant version is the best compromise between the rambling original and eviscerated revision. It doesn't hurt that Horowitz simply plays the blazes out of this piece, particularly in the 1968 performance heard here. Horowitz adeptly navigates through the "soul-states" of Scriabin's 3rd Sonata, the orgiastic revelry of the 5th, before leading us into the sulphurous labyrinths of the "Black Mass" 9th and rebirth in the 10th.

The Barber, Kabalevsky 2nd, and Prokofiev 7th Sonatas included here are all world-premiere recordings. After hearing Horowitz's recording of the 7th Sonata, Prokofiev sent the pianist a signed copy of the score with the note "To the miraculous pianist from the composer." One can be confident Kabalevsky and Barber felt the same way. Surprisingly, Horowitz's shattering live performance of Kabalevsky's Sonata No. 2 is not included here.

This is another of Sony's "bare-bones" reissues. There are no liner notes, just the discs with simple slip covers, program information, and recording dates - and there is no remastering beyond what's previously been done. (The sound varies from cramped mono, to dryish early stereo, unlistenable Liszt, and surprisingly spacious Scriabin 5th and Schumann.) Horowitz fans will already have these recordings in their collection, but for the budget conscious newcomer who wants to hear how Horowitz played large-scale works, this set is a great bargain.
