Notes and Editorial Reviews

No showmanship, no big gestures, but great music-making from a great pianist.

"There are those pianists whose polite, decent accounts of the standard repertoire sit meekly on the racks of record shops waiting to be picked up by uncritical music-lovers; and there are those whose recordings should have a flag waving at them – ‘Pick me. I’m different. I’m special. You’ll be amazed’. Each work on [this set] is evidence of a life-enhancing musician who cannot wait to get into the studio to show you the great purpose of his visit: he has some wonderful music to play for you!" -- Jeremy Nicholas, Gramophone [2/2005]

"Julius Katchen was best known for his Brahms, but his pianism – muscular yet agile

The energised LSO is suitably exuberant, but risks ungainliness in No. 4’s Andante, where stridency threatens the delicate balance between orchestra and soloist. Also in the G major Concerto, Katchen opts for a first-movement cadenza whose rampant virtuosity is like a whirlpool in a millpond. No. 3 is another hit, though, and the Choral Fantasia, which in some hands sounds like an expendable footnote to the Ninth Symphony, is stunning." Performance: 5 (out of 5), Sound: 5 (out of 5)

He died to early in life. August 2, 2013 By Louis G Trichard (Yamba, New South Wales) See All My Reviews "I enjoy his style and interpretation of Beethoven's Concertos. He is intensely accurate with his fingering. I only wish I could buy copies of these recordings on vinyl. Otherwise, thanks for the prompt service. The goods obviously arrived intact and in good time. Kind regards, lou." Report Abuse
