Notes and Editorial Reviews

This new BIS release has virtually everything you want in a recording of Dvorák's Cello Concerto: bold, impassioned, and technically assured playing (by Torleif Thedéen), and taut, dramatic orchestral accompaniment (from Kees Bakels and the Malaysian Philharmonic). Thedéen goes for the gusto in his strongly projected opening, where his exhortations remain thoroughly musical, never degenerating into the vulgar mannerisms exhibited by some lesser (and a few supposedly greater) cellists who've also recorded this work. Thedéen also displays imagination and sensitivity as well as an engaging tenderness in the Adgaio, making this movement his best performance of three. Both soloist and conductor generate impressive rhythmic energy in the powerful Read more finale, bringing the work to a highly satisfying close. Although classic versions by Rostropovich and Piatigorsky still rank at the top, Thedéen's is certainly a fully recommendable modern version. Plus, as a bonus you get two unusual couplings: Bakels' atmospheric rendition of Dvorák's Water Goblin, and a Carnival Overture that fairly bursts with euphoric energy. BIS's trademark clear, spacious sound seals the deal.
