Notes and Editorial Reviews

An excellent performance of most of Khachaturian's piano music on one disc. McLachlan shines throughout, delivering Khachaturian's works directly and powerfully. Includes: Toccata (1932), Poem (1927), Two Pieces (1926), Sonatina (1959), Ten Children's Pieces, Sonata (1961), and the Waltz from 'Maskarade.'

'Toccata is a frequent concert encore... At 80 minutes, this CD offers all of (Khachaturian’s) piano music with (two minor) exceptions... Sonatina very touching as are the Ten Children’s Pieces... Murray McLachlan... is a persuasive guide' -- Penguin Guide 3 stars

Fine Recital April 9, 2016 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Twentieth century Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian is perhaps best known for his colorful orchestral compositions, but he also composed a number of pieces for piano. On this excellent Musical Concepts recording, British pianist Murray MacLachlan gives a highly satisfying introduction to Khachaturian's style. With occasional forays into light dissonance, these six deceptively uncomplicated works feature imaginative networks of melody and generally good cheer, perhaps best exemplified in the 10 Children's Pieces from the 1960's. On the other hand, Khachaturian lived through the era of tight governmental control of the arts in the Soviet Union, and his striking 30 minute Sonata from 1961, with its moments of sarcasm, introspective questioning, and possibly even anger, may well reflect his residual disgust with the effects of Socialist Realism, with which he had to deal. This is an illuminatory recording, a fine introduction to Khachaturian's piano music, and is something that should appeal to all piano enthusiasts. I definitely liked this recording, and I suspect that you will as well. Recommended." Report Abuse
A Real Spellbinder! June 23, 2014 By bess holloway (Boulder, CO) See All My Reviews "I can hardly imagine these wonderful works delivered with more energy than here on this very generous disc. I've always found Khachaturian's music highly attractive, and Murray McLachlan adds beautifully to my collection. A super-bargain for the price!" Report Abuse
