GLOSSA 80003 (58:05)
This album was recorded in 1991 and originally released on Symphonia 9107. It’s been generally unavailable for some time, so its reappearance as part of the Glossa catalog is welcome. Johann Heinrich Schmelzer was less known in the early 1990s than he is today, with his works increasingly recorded and programmed at early-music concerts. He was fortunate in serving two emperors of the Habsburg

line, Ferdinand III and Leopold I, who shared his conservative taste for Italian
balletto
and violin sonatas—especially the likes of Uccellini, Ferrari, and Marini.
The disc samples works from a pair of publications of Schmelzer: both his two-voiced
Duodena selectarum sonatarum
of 1659, and the richer textures of his
Sacro-profanus concentus musicus
published in 1662. The performances are sophisticated and technically expert, from musicians who have made this kind of thing a specialty. I would suggest two things that might have changed in their performances over the intervening 20 years, given their more recent work: first, a greater inclusion of ornamentation in slow sections, and second, more flexibility in phrasing, especially in the
Duodena
selections. Even so, it’s impossible to fault the splendid verve of the penultimate section in the Sonata V
à sei
, the elegant precision of the Sonata X
à tre
’s second movement, or the warm, dark tone of the Sonata III
à sei
’s opening. This is excellent playing, whatever the vintage. In short, recommended.
