Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is an important set showcasing the work of a major conductor. With one exception (Bunin’s Symphony No. 5) all of the music here features the Moscow Chamber Orchestra founded by Barshai. He famously gave the premiere of Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony, and a live performance featuring Galina Vishnevskaya and Mark Reshetin is included here. These recordings offer music from Bach (The Art of Fugue), Gluck, Purcell, and Rameau, to Haydn (a fine Trumpet Concerto and other works), Mozart (Symphony No. 29 and Divertimento No. 17), Beethoven (Second Piano Concerto and Eighth Symphony), and a feast of contemporary music from the familiar (Bartók, Britten, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Hindemith, and Martinu) to the rare (Rääts, Read more Meerovich, Lokshin, and Weinberg). Not all of it is equally fine, as you might expect. The performances of the classical repertoire seem a touch old fashioned, but so what? The sonics are also unusually good coming from this source. This is a set that collectors will surely cherish.
