Of the great bass-baritone Hans Hotter’s four recordings of Winterreise between 1942 and 1969, this one from1954, now beautifully remastered, is undoubtedly the best, and in many ways a benchmark itself within the recorded history of Schubert’s song-cycle. Compared with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hotter’s is a comparatively "non-interventionist" approach. Individual words are not pointed up so much as subtly shifting moods. And the cycle’s spiritual darkness is there within the covered tones and dark vowels of the voice, sustained and subtly variegated in long, fine lines and lightly-breathed phrases.  Hotter Supreme in Winterreise May 28, 2013 By Basil De Pinto (Piedmont, CA) See All My Reviews "There are many fine recordings of Schubert's great cycle, among them those by Fischer-Dieskau, Fritz Wunderlich, and more recently Matthias Goerne, the last joined, rather than simply accompanied by, the great Alfred Brendel. But all of these must be judged by the gold standard set by the incomparable Hans Hotter. Gerald Moore is also a co-worker as he interprets the piano part of the score. Hotter, famed as the greatest Wotan of his day, inhabited the world of the Lied with comparable authority. He used his enormous voice, capable of filling the largest opera house, with a delicacy and finesse that proceeded from a profound musical intelligence. His mastery of both text and music in this performance insures that each song is an integral dramatic whole, a fusion of each element in an artistic unity that embodies the intention of both poet and composer.
