Notes & Reviews Back to Top
John Adams's evolution as a minimalist composer resonates loudly with sounds of self-exploration, and relentless pursuits of composing captivating works that are new, and boldly American. Musically filling the gaps between such notable composers as Philip Glass and Steve Reich, Adams's approach is uniquely different. He describes himself as "a minimalist bored with minimalism." Using a coloristic method, his orchestration of 'Harmonium' is triumphantly a primordial experience, celebrating the uses of the major and minor chord. Enamored with the simplicity of subtle shifts in chord structure, repetition, and sonority, Adams conveys musical drama with superior flexibility and control. Conducted by Adams, this performance by the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus is marvelous, capturing the intrinsic spirit of the composer-ensemble synergy.
Choruses from 'The Death of Klinghoffer,' based on a 1984 hijacking, continue the exploration of the political tones in Adams's music. Described more as a medieval passion play, in Adams's words, 'The Death of Klinghoffer' utilizes frequent choral interludes, each conspiring to unveil suspense, leading to an articulate conclusion. Conductor Kent Nagano, with the Orchestra of the Opera de Lyon and London Opera Chorus, puts forward wonderful renditions.
