Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ronald Dowd; Wandsworth School Boys’ Choir, London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus/Sir Colin Davis. Philips 416 283-2 [2 CDs; with Symphonie funèbre et triomphale].

Davis’s powerful account is one of the high points of his 1960s Berlioz cycle for Philips. In a reading notable as much for its attention to detail as its sense of sweep, he builds grand climaxes with absolute sureness while showing an extraordinary ear for nuance and color. The playing of the London orchestra is ravishing, and the recording, made in Westminster Cathedral in 1969, is well focused and ideally atmospheric. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
