Read more /> We seem to be working backward in this series, Volume 3 currently in the offing, with four others already in the Fanfare can, reviewers Boyd Pomeroy, Lynn René Bayley, Patrick Rucker, and my humility all weighing in with decidedly different conclusions. I came out in favor of the disc that included Symphony No. 25 ( Fanfare 33:3), and Rucker was equally effusive in 31:1. But Bayley was wanting more—evidently quite a bit more as she feels that Fischer is missing the same sort of enlightenment he brought to the complete Haydn symphonies—though she thinks the performances played “beautifully.” Pomeroy is more critical in 33:5, not particularly liking the period influence on the performances, thinking them overdone and a little hard-edged. In fact, he explains that “here the relentless dynamic manipulation comes across as exaggerated, manufactured; in short, the players give the impression of working too hard to sound like a period ensemble.”

To each his or her own, I guess, and I would be glad if Lynn and Boyd would send me their copies because I think Fischer is just right in these works to date, and I can name any number of woefully wretched-sounding period performances, especially the illuminating but still wiry Hogwood accounts. Whether Fischer can keep up standards once we get to the more “known” entities remains another matter—this was in many people’s eyes the failure of his Haydn set, though the more I listen to the mature works in that cycle the more I like at least a good number of them. And I really don’t feel the period effects overdone, especially in the pieces on this disc. Fischer plans to record 44 of the essentially 70 symphonies that Mozart penned, though a good number of them come from serenades-turned-symphonies and a rather large number of opera overtures and sinfonias for other occasions. But in these early pieces, taken from a youthful time when the Italian style was rampant and all the rage in Vienna, and music like this filled the bill for any number of concert settings, the rowdy nature of the performances seems perfectly suited to the attention-grabbing scenarios that these works were undoubtedly meant to inspire. Mozart knew how to capture an audience, even when the material was only meant to garner an audience into the festivities. I doubt that Fischer will use this same approach as we get near the “immortal” works, but we shall see. In the meanwhile, I can’t imagine anyone not liking what he does here with these early yet exciting symphonic efforts.

As usual, the Danish National Chamber Orchestra plays with a lot of verve and authority, and the SACD sound is simply state-of-the-art, never bettered. If you want to sample this series, this might be a good place to start.
