Notes and Editorial Reviews

When Dame Margaret Price died in January 2011, the musical world reacted in an understandably emotional fashion. By contrast, the Welsh soprano herself was a woman with an understated approach to her life, eschewing the frenetic international star system in favour of loyalty to a select few major opera houses. She bade farewell to public performance in 1999, retiring to rural Wales where she turned to breeding golden retrievers. Although a local vicar persuaded her to perform in a charity concert, she found the occasion so nerve-wracking that her dogs finally became the only audience for her singing.

“The world’s most beautiful voice is now silent,” reported obituary columns everywhere, not least in France, where the memory
Read more of her Countess in Giorgio Strehler’s Paris Opéra production of Le nozze di Figaro remained fresh after more than 30 years. Price’s prowess in Mozart can be admired in a number of studio recordings: in Figaro as the Countess for Riccardo Muti, and, from earlier in her career, as Barbarina for Klemperer – also the conductor for her superb Fiordiligi; as Konstanze at Glyndebourne under Pritchard and (for Decca) as Donna Anna in Solti’s first recording of Don Giovanni.

For all her achievements in opera, song was Price’s first and last love, and she gave us some of the finest discs of lieder produced in the last 40 years. This exemplary collection of Strauss has long been unavailable and EMI is proud to re-acquaint audiences with the album, which benefits from the presence of a great Straussian, Wolfgang Sawallisch, at the piano. It is complemented with five Liszt songs recorded for the Classics for Pleasure label in the early 1970s. The pianist here is James Lockhart, who became a mentor to the young Margaret Price, playing a vital role in elevating her from a promising mezzo to a sublime soprano.
