Great pair of Bruckner Symphonies! April 18, 2013

"Bernard Haitink is among the greatest Bruckner conductors, and these performances are examples of his finest work. Tempos are not rushed but never drag, the playing of the Vienna Philharmonic is very fine, and these recordings of both symphonies are wonderful. Symphony #3 is the 1877 revision of the score, somewhat more concise than the original, but not oversimplified as is the final revision Bruckner made a few years later. Many beautiful and exciting passages, sounding a bit like improvisations, remain in the 1877. There is little more I can say about #8 except that this is one of the the very finest recordings of that monumental symphony I have ever heard. The compact format of these Philips "Duo" packages also is a convenience. I already had Haitink's performances of these works with the Royal Concertgebouw, but I'm very glad i bought these Vienna peformances; they are better!"
