Notes and Editorial Reviews

Maurice Ravel has long been noted for the passionate enthusiasm of his compositions. The intense emotional reaction he inspires has made him a perennial favorite of concertgoers. This collection of Ravel's orchestral pieces offers a choice selection of his most notable works. Two of the world's greatest orchestras, led by the same excellent conductor, treat listeners to a brilliantly performed program.
Few pieces of 20th-century classical music have the popular appeal of Ravel's 'Boléro.' Based on a traditional Spanish dance, it is ageless and hardly feels like a contemporary composition. Deceptively simple, it builds to a mighty crescendo. Similarly impassioned, Ravel's 'Rapsodie espagnole' is far more complex in its structure. The
Read more early overture 'Shéhérazade' and the 'Valses nobles et sentimentales' are more serene, and yet just as full of romance.
Conductor Claudio Abbado gets excellent performances out of both the Boston and London Symphony Orchestras, inspiring his musicians to pour their hearts into every passage. Digital remastering of the original recordings brings greater definition and clarity to the album. Read less
