The wonderfully accomplished lutenist Nigel North entitles his first Weiss collection The Heart Trembles with Pleasure , after a line written by court poet Johann Ulrich von Konig about “Sylvius.” I am not sure that my heart trembles when North is playing these dance movements, but his sprightly minuets raise my spirits. It’s certainly good to have these stylish recordings that don’t duplicate any of a dozen Weiss recordings in my collection, including the several by the equally accomplished Jakob Lindberg. North’s tone is silvery, but warm. He makes the lute sing: It must be an illusion but his notes seem to sustain longer than those of other lutenists. Then too, he has such a clear sense of the direction and meaning of each of these movements that one feels literally in good hands. The last movement of the Sonata in D is the Passacaille that many listeners will recognize. These two discs are part of a projected four-disc collection of Weiss recordings by Nigel North. They should all be equally valuable and appealing.
