Notes and Editorial Reviews

Vintage Baker. Her performance of the Lucrezia cantata (a masterpiece of its kind) is surely one of the great pieces of sustained dramatic singing on records. Every change of mood is caught, vividly as in a searchlight, and the concentration is almost frightening. Runs of the utmost brilliance are a feature here and in the arias on Side 2. "Dopo notte" astonishes and invigorates afresh; livelier, with more spring to it, in this recording than in the complete opera (Philips 6769 025, 8/80). "Dove sei" has unusual strength, "0 had I Jubal's lyre" unusual speed, "Ombra mat lii" an unusual pianissimo at the climax, but all these are happy features of a glorious recital—in which the oddly infirm first sung Read more note of the famous Largo remains as reassuring evidence of human frailty.

A no brainer... January 10, 2012 By Nicholas M See All My Reviews "This is a fantastic recording. This has nothing to do with boring Haendel (water music, messiah, etc...) This is, in its own gender, as beautiful, and maybe even more, than the Dixit Dominus by, for instance, Gardiner Erato recording.

It is one of the most beautiful recordings I have. First Baker is outstanding, but that's not the point. The point is that this music is one of the most beautiful Handel ever wrote.
