Notes and Editorial Reviews
DG's remastering of this marvelous Mahler Ninth eliminates some odd extraneous noise that marred what was otherwise a very fine recording, technically speaking. The performance itself has tremendous warmth and style, and whatever one's slight reservations, it remains a major statement by a great artist, delivered in a language of uncompromising emotional sincerity. True, the second movement lacks sufficient contrast (the waltz sections really do hang fire), and the Rondo-Burleske could stand a bit more nastiness, but the first movement encompasses a vast emotional range, from its almost too sweet opening to a climax of really shattering violence. In the finale, too, Giulini lets the music sing with an Italianate lyricism that leaves a final
impression, not so much of sadness, but of gentle regret amidst fulfillment.
Schubert's "Unfinished" makes an unusually apt coupling: the emotional curve of its two movements makes it almost a mini-Mahler Ninth without the two scherzos. Giulini's grave, dignified performance sounds gorgeous in this transfer. [10/27/2000]
