These are stylish, lively performances, and if you can accept the very fast tempos in the outside movements you'll find them easy to enjoy. The finales get the fastest performances that have ever come my way, and the first movement of the E major Concerto doesn't dawdle. The result is that the occasional demisemiquavers find Simon Standage on the very edge of disaster, and it is much to his credit that he survives. But then he is a very talented player, with lovely tone as well as an impressive technique—and in the Double Concerto he is well matched by Elizabeth Wilcock.
The slow movements are more conventional in tempo than Schröder's (L'Oiseau-Lyre) and perhaps to be preferred, but not the quick ones which on the rival

disc are lively but not to excess. The digital recording allows for some unexpected orchestral detail, revealing from bar 57 of the E major's first movement an interesting melodic line on the violas that I for one had not noticed before. I'm not sure that I like the tiny hesitations between sections in both this and the first movement of the Double Concerto, not being convinced that string players in Bach's day ever attempted such touches of sophistication. As for the finales, the one in the Double Concerto sounds hectic but exciting, and the one in the A minor Concerto may well sweep you off your feet. I find it hard to choose between this disc and Schröder's; you'll find either well worth considering.
