Notes and Editorial Reviews
Vienna's musical year shines with two dates that always dazzle: The New Year's Day concert with the Vienna Phiharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic's open-air concert in the gardens of the palace of Schonbrunn (Vienna), the Summer Night Concert.
The theme of this year's summer night concert is "Virtuoso pictures" and Valery Gergiev, in the opinion of The Guardian "the greatest conductor of his generation", led the orchestra in Liszt's Preludes, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Kreisler's Concerto in one movement after the first movement of the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major, op. 6 by Nicolo Paganini.
In memory of the victims of the recent Japan disasters, Jean
Sibelius's Scene with Cranes has been included in the programme.
The renowned violinist Benjamin Schmid was the soloist. The Strad Magazine commented on the Austrian violinist: "His golden tone, immaculate intonation, faultless technique and total identification with this magical score are truly things of wonder. A violin classic."
