Notes and Editorial Reviews

Rising like a pure spirit above the scourge of persistent ill health, the Romanian pianist Clara Haskil (1895-1960) was undoubtedly one of the great ones. Her playing was noted for its delicacy, restraint, and taste, but those refined qualities in no way ruled out rhythmic zest and iridescent color, nor did they imply any lack of virtuosity: Her technique was magisterial, and it was certainly virtuoso in the sense that it left her free to concentrate on musical ends rather than worrying about physical means.

Within the context of an unfailingly apt sense of style and scale, one of the most striking aspects of her performances here is actually the energy and vigor she brings to what in some other pianists' hands remains mere
Read more passagework. The long strings of 16th notes around measure 100 in the first movement of the D-Minor Concerto, for instance, transcend mere display in a grand growth of intensity that is truly dramatic. Tempos are always musically appropriate: The finale of that same concerto, in particular, is taken at a relatively leisurely pace that, while probably harder in terms of even execution, yields richer rewards than the helter-skelter dash we too often hear.

-- Bernard Jacobson, FANFARE [3/1999, reviewing Piano Concertos 13 & 20]

-------------

The line between artful simplicity and artless tedium is surprisingly fine, but Haskil, an artist to her flawless fingertips, never crosses it... The subtlety and grace of Haskil’s playing defy analysis and imitation alike...

-- Jeremy Siepmann, BBC Music Magazine [reviewing K 280]
