"Francisco De Penalosa: Missa Ave Maria; Sacris Solemniis; Missa Nunc Fue Pena Mayor Westminster Choir in there Element!!! This recording really shows Westminster Choir in all of their glory. The technic is perfect and the sound is just right for this music. Penalosa is the generation before Moralis. Penalosa spent many years singing and it shows in his compositions. Each vocal line shines with energy and vigor. Penalosa uses simple melodic lines at a more stately pace much like Victoria. These Masses were written for joyful occasions. In places these masses just bubble with good feeling. Something very unusual for the Spanish of this time period and quite hard to do when the Music is based on Chant. And especially pay attention to the “Amens” that Penalosa writes. These are just amazing examples of virtuosity, rhythm, and talent. Here these historical musical notes just leap off of the page reminding us of why these people are remembered for centuries after their death."
