The only music on this disc faithful to the extant scores are the two cantata sinfonias and the Adagio from the Easter Oratorio, all of which are, of course, taken out of context. No matter. The Bach concertos are reconstructions of the presumed original compositions, which have been preserved in what are probably Bach’s own transcriptions. It’s entirely possible that the double concerto is more commonly performed in the oboe-and-violin reconstruction than in its extant scoring for two harpsichords, and the solo concertos are now staples of the oboe repertoire, as is the popular Marcello concerto. But here is the fun part. Ever industrious and inquisitive, Bach made study copies in keyboard format of many existing concertos, Vivaldi being a favorite model. Marcello’s concerto was one, and in the process of making the copy, Bach, perhaps instinctively, ornamented Marcello’s original. For the present performance Heinz Holliger, himself ever inquisitive and industrious, has reversed the process, making an orchestral transcription of Bach’s version of Marcello’s concerto. To be sure, most listeners will hardly notice, since Holliger is a master of ornamentation and habitually embellishes as he plays anyway. Still, he must have appreciated Bach’s road map in making this performance.

Holliger has recorded all of the music on this program before, except possibly the Adagio, mostly for Philips. I would be hard-pressed to say whether he has improved on the earlier versions, some of which may not be easy to find. Holliger has had many excellent collaborators over the years, and he has found another in Erich Höbarth. These are all, as we have come to expect, superb performances, and highly recommended to any listeners who love Bach and cherish superlative oboe playing.
