| The American avant-garde vocalist Cathy Berberian had a mostly Eurocentric career and didn't do many studio recordings. Happily, through her partnership with her husband--the Italian modernist Luciano Berio--she did occasionally record for a major label. "Recital I For Cathy" is a major work, a comic pastiche/breakdown that would do John Zorn proud in its theatrical juxtapositions. It begins with a straight reading of her beloved Monteverdi (she was one of the Renaissance composer's greatest interpreters) and things go downhill from there--in high Marx Brothers fashion. Then the ever-surprising Berberian offers us "Folk Songs," Berio's relatively staid settings of traditional tunes. This virtuoso vocalist was also one of the few classical artists who could sing naturally, without an overly stressed operatic delivery, if and when the material demanded it. | |||||
